Student Competition: Poster Presentation



  • $100 for First Place
  • Name and photo announcement for local media
  • Announcement on the International Microscopy Listserv


  • Subject matter should be a biological- or a biological/materials science- project you have worked on, highlighting use of the core facilities of MRL, Beckman or IGB.
  • Upload a 1/2 page abstract (2-3 images may be included) online with your registration.
  • The presentation should include tutorial-like explanations of the principles of the instruments and techniques used.
  • Be ready and available to deliver your poster by 10 am November 11 and be available (a participant of the conference) during the afternoon of November 13.
  • Presenters shall attend the designated poster session period to discuss their work with attendees and judges and to answer questions.


  • Entries accepted from meeting registrants only
  • Participants are to be Graduate or Undergraduate Students from an institution of higher learning
  • Entries limited to 35 student posters
  • Posters shall be one- piece with a maximum size of 36” x 48”. Portrait or landscape orientation accepted.
  • Posters may be entered by a group
  • Normal registration fees for the meeting apply

Judging criteria (included but not limited to)

  • Methods and instrumentation explained in tutorial fashion
  • Knowledge of the instrument(s) and technique(s) shown
  • Subject matter conveyed in an understandable and ordered manor
  • Artistically pleasing layout, typography
  • Use and quality of images
  • Winners will be announced at the end of the 2nd day of competition.
